Deborah Burtlow Obituary

Deborah Burtlow, 70, of Newton, died Monday, April 8, 2024, at Park Centre in Newton. A celebration of life will be held May 25, 2024, at the East Shelter at Rock Creek State Park, beginning at 10 a.m. Memorials in Deb’s name (make checks payable to James Burtlow) can be brought to the celebration or left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. 

   Deb, the daughter of Dale and Ruth (Burk) Miller, was born December 7, 1953, in Newton.  She grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1972. She began working as a nurses’ aide and then a medication aide while studying to be a nurse. Deb obtained her LPN and worked at Newton Health Care Center, Nelson Manor, and later at Mercy in Des Moines.  She was united in marriage with Dale Allen Burtlow on June 13, 1981, at Zoar Church in rural Newton. Deb enjoyed reading books, learning about history, and spending time in nature. She enjoyed going to Mariposa, Red Rock, or any park where she could enjoy the sounds of the outdoors. Rock Creek was a family favorite, where weekly visits were a longtime family tradition. 

   Deb is survived by her husband, Allen of Newton; son, James (Layne) Burtlow of Newton; grandchildren: Bentley, Lara, Benjamin, and Ensley; her siblings and their families:  Jody Guinan and her children, Cher Harris, Angie Bensco, Stacey Ross, and Jennifer Guinan; Mike (Laura) Miller and their children, Carlie Wilson and Jenna Miller; Jeff (Debbie) Miller and their children, Kelsey (Damon) Daugherty, Lauren Miller, and Josh Miller; and Tim (Sarah) Miller and their children, Carissa Miller, Dylan Miller, and Jacob Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter-in-law, Nikki Burtlow; and grandparents including her grandma, Norma Miller.
